On September 14, 2023, in Chicago, an alarming incident unfolded where a man, identified as Jeremiah Campbell, was taken into custody after allegedly trying to drown his young son, terming it a “sacrifice for Jehovah.”
The authorities were alerted to the situation by a Lyft driver who overheard Campbell’s disturbing comments during their journey and promptly called 911 after dropping off the father and son at an apartment.
From the police report, it is evident that Campbell, 29, discussed his desire to drown his son and mentioned other conspiracy-related views. During the attempted drowning, an emergency call was placed from the same residence to alert police.
Upon arrival, the Chicago police knocked on the apartment door but received no answer. However, officers saw a man through a window, close to a bathtub.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, the officers entered the apartment, encountering Campbell and the child. The young boy was found expelling water and was promptly taken to a hospital. His current health status remains undisclosed. A witness at the scene said, “They brought the child out and he was wet and coughing.”
Campbell has been charged with offenses including attempted murder, child endangerment, and violation of a protective order. The Cook County State Attorney’s Office authenticated these charges. Of note, a protective order had been implemented, barring Campbell from being near the boy.
Following medical examination, Campbell is currently incarcerated in Cook County Jail, without bail. His court date was September 21.
Lyft highlighted the interception of their driver with a statement, “We recognize the alertness of the Lyft driver… Their timely report contributed to preventing potential harm to the child.”
