A 29-year-old man from Ohio is facing charges after allegedly shooting his pregnant sister, Mercedes Iverson, 30, and her husband, Trea Carter, 31, in a park in Maple Heights, a Cleveland suburb.
The event took place during a picnic at the park on Labor Day. Information points to an earlier disagreement between the siblings as a potential trigger for the shooting. Jason Iverson reportedly confronted Mercedes Iverson and Carter during the gathering.
An argument ensued and Mercedes Iverson, Carter, and a 13-year-old boy tried to drive away. This is when Jason Iverson is believed to have drawn a handgun and fired at their vehicle. Mercedes Iverson was struck by the gunfire. The young boy sustained a slight arm injury in the process. Carter, while trying to get away, was pursued by Iverson and was eventually shot dead in the park restroom.
Both Carter and Mercedes, along with her unborn child, lost their lives. The 13-year-old was treated medically and has been released.
On September 6, Jason Iverson was officially charged with murder and attempted murder.
