A one-year-old girl from Brooklyn who was discovered with head injuries and broken bones in her home has been declared a victim of homicide, according to police statements released Thursday.
The child was found unresponsive in her residence on St. Marks Avenue in Crown Heights around 6:45 pm on Friday, September 15. A man called 911 to report the baby’s condition.
Upon their arrival, Emergency Medical Services personnel transported her to Kings County Hospital Center. Her 29-year-old mother was present at the hospital with her. The child’s condition was serious, prompting her transfer to Maimonides Medical Center. Sadly, she passed away on Wednesday, September 13, due to her injuries.
The injuries included trauma to the child’s head and fractures to her femur. A medical examination confirmed that the cause of death was homicide.
No one has been charged yet in relation to her death. Detectives, however, are interviewing several individuals associated with the case.
In the initial discussions with detectives, the girl’s mother stated that her daughter had consumed excessive milk which resulted in choking. She further explained that she was away at a nearby store when the incident occurred.
Authorities are currently conducting an autopsy to gain more insights into the case.
The girl’s parents had a prior case with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services. The specifics of this case have not been shared by the authorities.
As a precautionary measure, the girl’s two-year-old brother was removed from the home. He was reported to be in good health with no visible injuries.
