On Wednesday, September 6, near a minor league baseball stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a shooting incident resulted in the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy and left a woman severely injured.
The shooting took place around 8:44 p.m. on Avenida Cesar Chavez, in close proximity to University Blvd, just beyond the boundaries of the Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.
Details provided by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) indicate that the young boy and his family had recently exited a baseball game and were departing from the venue in their truck. Their vehicle reportedly pulled in front of another car, which led to an alleged road rage incident.
Chief Harold Medina of APD noted that the driver of the car that was cut off made a U-turn, following which someone from inside the vehicle discharged 17 shots toward the family’s truck and then supposedly left the location.
The young victim did not survive the injuries sustained from the gunfire. A woman in her 20’s, identified as the boy’s aunt, was transported to University Hospital in critical condition.
The incident occurred while the Albuquerque Isotopes, a minor league team, were playing a game. Due to the police officers already stationed at the stadium for monitoring, they could respond to the incident in a timely manner. Chief Medina, addressing the press on Thursday, referred to the situation as “difficult,” particularly after discovering the young victim inside the vehicle.
The case is now in the hands of an expert homicide investigation team. As of now, the APD has yet to arrest any individuals linked to the event and is appealing to the public for any relevant information.
