A 14-year-old boy from Riverview, Florida, was arrested on Saturday, September 16, after an incident where his mother was fatally shot, and her boyfriend was critically injured. This information was disclosed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Law enforcement was called to the scene in the Summerfield subdivision around 4 pm that day after receiving several emergency calls. Sheriff Chad Chronister later shared specifics about the incident in a press briefing.
Upon reaching the location, responding deputies found the teenager threatening self-harm by pointing a gun at himself. After negotiating with him for about 16 minutes, they managed to disarm him using a non-lethal projectile. The boy was taken into custody soon after without further confrontations.
Not long after the boy’s arrest, another call was attended by the deputies about a man with gunshot injuries. This man was identified as the mother’s boyfriend, who had suffered wounds on his lower torso, hands, and face. He was immediately transported to Tampa General Hospital and is currently in a critical state.
Further details emerged when the young suspect’s elder brother, who was in the house during the shooting, spoke to the deputies. He mentioned overhearing a heated argument between his mother and her boyfriend before the gunshots. Upon checking after hearing the shots, he found his younger brother shooting their mother. The younger sibling also attempted to aim the gun at him, leading the older brother to quickly leave the area.
Based on the details provided, Sheriff Chronister surmised that the boy might have first shot the boyfriend and then his mother. The teenager, as per records, had no prior run-ins with the law.
The ongoing investigation awaits a search warrant to further probe the incident.
