The tragic death of Harris Wolobah, a 14-year-old from Worcester, Massachusetts, occurred on Friday, September 1, shortly after he engaged in the popular social media “One Chip Challenge.”
A student at Doherty Memorial High School, Harris ate a Paqui chip, resulting in a bout of stomach unease. Though he appeared to recuperate after reaching home, he was later found unresponsive as he prepared to attend basketball tryouts.
The definitive cause behind this tragedy is still being investigated.
Harris’s mother, Lois Wolobah, has shared her conviction that the aftermath of consuming the spicy chip might have contributed to her son’s unfortunate passing.
Paqui, the brand responsible for the chip, has previously indicated potential health concerns on its site. They specify that the chip, touted as one of the globe’s spiciest due to ingredients like Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers, is meant for adults.
The consumption of such intensely spicy products can be detrimental, especially to those with pre-existing health issues, such as cardiac concerns.
Expressing sorrow, Worcester Schools Superintendent Rachel Monarrez reflected on the loss of a student with Harris’s promise. Further sentiments on Harris’s dedication were shared by Douglas Hill, his basketball coach at St. Bernard’s church team.
The autopsy’s outcome remains pending.
