In Penrose, Colorado, investigators unearthed an alarming find at the Return to Nature Funeral Home: a total of 189 decomposing bodies, a figure that overshadows an initial count of 115.

The community, especially those who sought the funeral home’s services, have been deeply affected by the large number of bodies found.

The investigation was initiated when local residents highlighted a persistent foul smell in proximity to the funeral home. The subsequent probe brought to light claims that the bodies were inadequately stored. Following this, the remains were relocated to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office for a detailed evaluation.

Despite being recognized for its environment-conscious burial methods, the Return to Nature Funeral Home found itself under scrutiny. The funeral home championed “green” burials that forgo embalming. They utilized biodegradable caskets or shrouds, aiming to have a reduced carbon footprint. The funeral home also offered a unique cremation service wherein a tree is planted in a Colorado National Forest as a permanent memorial.

Yet, their green credentials did not absolve them from the state’s legal requirements. Per Colorado rules, bodies need to be either interred within 24 hours or appropriately refrigerated. The state of the bodies at the funeral home suggested a violation of these norms.

Jon Hallford, who owns the funeral home, had earlier informed officials about his taxidermy-related activities on the site. Demonstrating a willingness to assist, Hallford allowed a facility inspection on October 4, 2023.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans to demolish the funeral Home. The demolition, scheduled to begin in January, is necessary to safely remove hazardous materials from the site.

The owners were arrested at the beginning of November and are facing multiple charges

As events continue to unfold, families that had interactions with the funeral home are naturally anxious and seeking clarity.
