On the evening of October 3, 2022, a small twin-engine Piper airplane descended unexpectedly into a residence in Newberg, Oregon, leading to the death of two of the plane’s occupants and leaving a third critically injured.
The aircraft, observed by multiple witnesses spiraling uncontrollably near North Cedar Street, eventually crashed, embedding itself both within the home and its backyard. First responders from the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, they located two individuals, 20-year-old Barrett Bevacqua and 22-year-old Michele Cavallotti, lifeless within the aircraft. Both Bevacqua, a student pilot, and Cavallotti, a flight instructor, were affiliated with Hillsboro Aero Academy.
Additionally, 20-year-old Emily Hurd, another pilot in training, was extracted from the wreckage in critical condition and was airlifted to a Portland-based hospital for immediate medical attention.
The house into which the plane crashed was not empty during the incident, but all present individuals managed to evacuate without sustaining any injuries.
The circumstances leading to this unfortunate event remain uncertain. However, local and federal authorities are collaborating to thoroughly investigate the cause of the crash and offer insights into the events that transpired.
A local resident named Micah captured footage of the plane during its unexpected descent. He mentioned the surreal nature of the event and expressed his deep condolences to the families affected.
