Guilty Verdict for Driver in Fatal Crash With Bicyclists

A verdict was reached on Friday, October 6, 2023, in the case of a 2022 crash during the Make-A-Wish charity bicycle ride.

Mandy Benn, 43, from Michigan, was convicted of second-degree murder and operating under the influence. Her sentencing, at a later date, could result in a life sentence.

While driving, Benn attempted to overtake a UPS truck, which resulted in her crossing into the opposing lane of traffic. This led to a fatal collision with bicyclists participating in the charity event.

Two of these cyclists, Edward Erickson, 48, and Michael Salhaney, 57, did not survive their injuries. A witness saw a body flying through the air.

The crash also left three other participants with injuries.

Although no alcohol was detected in Benn’s system, her behaviors suggested potential impairment. Her speech was slurred, and she had difficulty following basic instructions, indicating the possibility of prescription drug effects. However, Benn’s legal defense noted that she had consumed only the therapeutic dosage of her medication prior to the accident.

The community remembered and acknowledged the contributions of both Erickson and Salhaney. Both men were dedicated participants in the event, with Erickson being known for his love of cycling and his commitment to helping children, and Salhaney, a father of seven, for his unwavering dedication to the charity.
