High School Student Passes Away After 5K Track Race

A 16-year-old student from Chisholm Trail High School in Haltom City, Tarrant County, Texas, collapsed on October 13, 2023, shortly after completing a 5K run during a district track meet.

Witnesses at the scene noted that Angel Hernandez fell just a short distance beyond the finish line. Responding promptly, several friends assisted him, guiding him to a nearby water fountain. Despite their efforts, Hernandez collapsed again. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he passed away about an hour following his arrival.

The sudden loss of Hernandez has been deeply felt by those who knew him. Brent Brevard, who once coached Hernandez at Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth, spoke highly of him. He highlighted that Hernandez wasn’t just a dedicated athlete, but also an outstanding student. “He worked hard and cared about his teammates. He also prioritized his studies,” Brevard stated.

The shocking incident has left friends, teammates, and family members puzzled, especially considering Hernandez had just clocked his best running time.

In addition to his passion for track and field, Hernandez was deeply involved in martial arts, regularly competing in events across the country. His karate coach, Ashley Wood, recalled his distinct and magnetic personality.

To assist the Hernandez family with funeral costs, Wood initiated a GoFundMe campaign.

The Chisholm Trail High School community also came together to honor Hernandez. During the school’s homecoming football game, a remembrance ceremony was conducted, and attendees observed a moment of silence to pay their respects.

Last Friday, Angel Hernandez’s funeral took place. In a touching gesture during the ceremony, his family was presented with a varsity letter jacket to remember him by.
