Northwestern State Football Player Fatally Shot

The college football game between Northwestern State and Nicholls State, planned for last weekend, was called off due to the death of a Northwestern State player in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

On the morning of October 12, 2023, 21-year-old Ronnie Caldwell, serving as a defensive back for Northwestern State, was fatally shot at his apartment complex in Natchitoches. A police officer discovered Caldwell between two buildings after hearing gunshots. Local media entities confirmed his death later.

Brad Laird, who leads Northwestern State’s football team as the head coach, conveyed his sympathy in a statement. He said, “Ronnie Caldwell was a young individual with great potential. His voice held weight in our locker room. When he spoke, his peers paid attention.”

Having transitioned from Tyler Junior College in 2022, Caldwell was active in 11 games for the team, leading in 10. Although an injury kept him off the field this season, his support as a coach was unwavering.

Following the incident, the scheduled Family Day celebrations, associated with the football game, were canceled, as announced by Nicholls State President Marcus D. Jones.

A thorough investigation is in process to provide clarity on Caldwell’s untimely death.
