A 23-year-old Howard County deputy sheriff was shot and killed outside Wayward Bar and Kitchen on 1117 South Charles Street late Friday night, September 28, 2023.

The Baltimore Police Department has arrested 40-year-old Jewel Crowder in connection with the incident. Crowder faces charges of first-degree murder. The shooting occurred shortly after midnight.

A verbal dispute broke out between some bar patrons, resulting in shots being fired and Deputy Ryan Alexander Demby being hit. Howard County Sheriff’s Office expressed their sorrow over the loss of Demby and extended their thoughts to the Demby family, Ryan’s friends, and their colleagues.

Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley noted the significant loss experienced by both the law enforcement community and Deputy Demby’s personal connections.

Deputy Demby recently completed his training at the academy in March and was described as a dedicated and promising member of the force. Howard County Sheriff Marcus Harris mentioned his decision to send Demby to the academy, highlighting his good character.

The Baltimore County Fraternal Order of Police revealed on Facebook that Ryan was the son of retired Baltimore County Police Department Detective, Sam Demby. Meaghan McKelvey, the Public Information Officer for the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, recalled Demby as a smart, funny, and dedicated individual. He had a passion for golf and frequently participated in tournaments.
