On October 10, 2023, London Luton Airport’s Terminal 2 parking garage experienced a major fire in the evening. The incident led to considerable travel disturbances and multiple injuries. Located about 35 miles from the heart of London, Luton Airport is essential for numerous travelers.
Around 9 pm, the fire appears to have started from a diesel-fueled vehicle on the garage’s top level. The non-existence of a sprinkler system facilitated the rapid spread of flames to other vehicles, exacerbating the situation, well-documented on video.
An eyewitness, having landed from Scotland shortly before, detailed the unfolding emergency. Fire engines tried to contain a vehicle fire, but in moments, most of the top level was consumed. The blaring of car alarms, along with continuous explosions, intensified the scene.
Due to the fire’s impact, four firefighters and one airport staff member were hospitalized for smoke-related issues. Another individual received immediate medical attention for lesser injuries at the location. Travel was heavily affected; 140 flights were cancelled that day, and 17 others had to be redirected, inconveniencing around 25,000 passengers.
The aftermath revealed significant structural harm to a part of the garage. Preliminary estimates highlight potential damage or destruction to as many as 1,200 vehicles. The scale and rapid progression of the fire were surprising to many, from passengers to airport employees.
Initial investigations by officials suggest the fire’s origin wasn’t malicious. However, questions regarding the garage’s lack of a sprinkler system have arisen.
By midday on Wednesday, the situation was stabilized, but the ongoing investigations and repercussions prompted traffic warnings near the airport.
