A 52-year-old Pakistani-American pediatrician who worked at The Texas Children’s Pediatrics Conroe was brutally stabbed multiple times outside her apartment in Conroe, Texas.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 28, 2023, while Dr. Talat Jehan Khan was seated with her dog at a picnic table.
The assailant, identified as 24-year-old Miles Joseph Fridrich, approached Khan during the mid-day hours and attacked her without any known provocation. Several bystanders and witnesses immediately rushed to Khan’s aid following the assault, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fridrich was arrested by law enforcement officers a short time after the incident and has been charged with first-degree murder. Authorities have delved into his background and have discovered a criminal history spanning offenses related to traffic, drugs, and firearms.
As investigators try to piece together the events leading to the killing, they have yet to uncover any evidence suggesting the attack was motivated by Khan’s race or ethnicity. However, they have noted that it does not appear Khan and Fridrich knew each other prior to the incident. The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Texas has expressed its intent to monitor the investigation closely, keen to determine if this was a racially motivated hate crime.
Khan’s death has left her family and the community in shock. Khan, who had recently relocated to Houston from Seattle, Washington, is survived by her 14-year-old daughter and 23-year-old son.
