In Goulds, Miami-Dade County, Florida, on September 23, a three-year-old girl named Serenity unintentionally discharged a handgun. Orlando Young, her 23-year-old relative, had his eyes glued to a football game on the television.
This incident started when Young joyfully leaped off the couch following a touchdown. He left the handgun within the reach of Serenity, as revealed through an in-home surveillance video that was later shared on social media.
The video showed the moments leading to Serenity picking up the weapon when an abrupt gunshot sound confirmed the worst. The young child was struck by the bullet to her finger.
Her grandmother, Robin Fuller, was quoted later mentioning, “It appears she was about to pick up the gun when it discharged, and the bullet struck her finger.” Fuller, who wasn’t at the home at the time, got a call about the incident, leading her to immediately call the police.
The absence of Serenity’s other grandmother, who was expected to be present to supervise the child, further complicated questions about the day’s events.
The harrowing event has amplified the discussions on responsible weapon ownership and childcare safety measures.
