University Professor Fatally Shot By His Student

On August 28, 2023, a shooting incident took place in a science lab office on the North Carolina campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, leading to a faculty member’s death.

UNC’s Department of Applied Physical Sciences faced a tragedy when Zijie Yan, an associate professor, was found in his office showing evidence of multiple gunshot wounds. An official autopsy clarified that injuries were spread across his head, face, neck, left arm, chest, and abdomen. Furthermore, superficial injuries were observed on his right upper arm, left hand, and left forearm. A count of nine shell casings were identified on site.

Charged in connection with this event is Tailei Qi, aged 34, a graduate student at the same institution. Yan had an established relationship with Qi, serving as his faculty adviser.

The alarming event led to a campus-wide lockdown, and alerts were disseminated about a possible threat. Reflecting on the incident, a group of students gathered to emphasize gun safety and also took a moment to remember the deceased professor.

Chancellor Guskiewicz subsequently addressed the campus, noting Yan’s contributions as both a colleague and a mentor. As the investigation proceeds, the district attorney has made it clear that Qi will not face the death penalty. The motive, at this point, remains undetermined.
