In a separate attack in Ituri province, the rebels were responsible for the death of 11 other villagers on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The region is home to more than 120 armed groups, many of which are vying for control over the area’s valuable mineral resources. Others claim to protect their communities.
The ADF, originally formed in Uganda in the 1990s before relocating to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been a significant contributor to the unrest in the region. The group has pledged allegiance to ISIS and has been implicated in thousands of killings in both the DRC and Uganda over the past decade.
In response to the attacks, the Congolese army engaged with the rebels, resulting in the deaths of six ADF members. The army also managed to free some hostages taken by the rebels.
