A tragic event in Georgetown, Texas, has culminated in the death of six-year-old Jeremy Diaz, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a home assault two months ago.
On the night of September 11, 2023, Daniel Logan, 39, a neighbor, broke into the Diaz residence and attacked Jeremy with a baseball bat as he slept.
The assault left Jeremy with critical injuries, including skull fractures and brain swelling. Logan’s mother, who tried to intervene, also suffered serious injuries, including facial wounds and a dislodged tooth.
After over 60 days in the hospital, and slowly improving, Jeremy suffered a neurostorm – a severe reaction caused by the brain injury. Arturo Diaz, his father, recounted the harrowing discovery of Jeremy’s relapse calling it “six hours of hell on earth”. After initially showing recovery signs, his condition later declined, leading to his death on November 14
Following the attack on Jeremy, which came at random, Logan was charged with causing serious bodily harm to a child and aggravated assault. With Jeremy’s death, these charges may be elevated to capital murder, pending an investigation by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Logan is currently in custody with a bond set at $650,000. He has undergone a mental health assessment. His attorney, Marc Chavez, has requested a careful approach to the case, highlighting Logan’s mental health issues.
Jeremy, described as a bright child with a love for activities like jiujitsu, soccer, and piano, leaves behind a grieving family and community. Arturo Diaz shared his sorrow, emphasizing the unnatural order of a parent witnessing their child’s death. The family arranged a memorial service at a local church.
