Early on November 8, 2023, a tragic accident occurred on U.S. Highway 57 close to Batesville, Texas, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the incident happened at approximately 6:30 a.m., with a direct collision between a 2009 Honda Civic, operated by a 21-year-old Houston resident, and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.
Reports indicate that the Honda was transporting five passengers, including the driver, all of whom are believed to have been part of a human smuggling operation. The vehicle was fleeing from police and was attempting to overtake an 18-wheeler in a zone where passing is prohibited when it collided with the Chevrolet SUV.
The occupants of both vehicles died in the crash. The SUV’s occupants, Jose Lerma, 67, and Isabel Lerma, 65, from Dalton, Georgia, were killed upon impact. In addition to the driver, the Honda carried five passengers, some reportedly from Honduras, who also died at the scene. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, making it difficult for rescue and recovery efforts.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and local Zavala County Sheriff’s Office authorities are investigating the crash.
Efforts are being made to reach out to the families of the deceased for necessary support and assistance during this difficult time.
