The local community is mourning the loss of Darrell Cunningham, a five-year veteran officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officer Cunningham, who was off-duty at the time, tragically lost his life in the early hours of November 4th, 2023 when the white Infiniti he was driving was struck by a speeding vehicle in Northridge, California.
According to authorities, 20-year-old Brian David Oliveri, who had a history of drunk driving, was traveling over 100 miles per hour in a black BMW when he ran a red light and crashed into Cunningham’s car. The force of the impact immediately killed Cunningham and his front-seat passenger. An off-duty sheriff’s deputy riding in the back seat survived with injuries.
Oliveri, who was intoxicated at the time of the crash, faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter.
Chief Michel R. Moore publicly announced Cunningham’s death, extending condolences to his fiancée and their two young sons. Though just 35 years old, Cunningham dedicated five years to the LAPD and the community of West Los Angeles.
In the days since the crash, the local community has come together to honor Cunningham’s memory, leaving flowers and tributes at the site of the tragic collision.
