A car crash in downtown Houston, Texas, in the early hours of November 11, 2023, resulted in the deaths of six people, including former NFL player D.J. Hayden and two of his former teammates from the University of Houston.
Around 2 a.m., a black Chrysler 300, reportedly speeding, ran a red light and collided with a black Acura SUV with the football players in it, traveling southbound on Fannin Street. The impact of the crash was catastrophic, leading to immediate fatalities and critical injuries to five men and a woman. Among those killed were Hayden, 33, a former cornerback for the Oakland Raiders, and his former University of Houston teammates, Zachary McMillian and Ralph Oragwu. Lauren Robinson-Holliday, a 32-year-old graduate of Hightower High School and East Texas Baptist University, was also among the deceased.
The Chrysler driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was also killed in the collision.
A nearby homeless man tragically lost his life due to the impact of the crash. Four people died at the scene and two more died from their injuries after being transported to the hospital. Jeffery Lewis, another former University of Houston football player, and another woman were reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Houston Police Department has launched a full investigation into the crash. Initial reports suggest that the Chrysler 300 significantly exceeded the speed limit when it ran the red light, leading to the deadly collision. The area, known for its busy nightlife, was particularly crowded at the time.
D.J. Hayden, a well-known figure, had been drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and was celebrated for his athletic prowess. His death, along with that of his former teammates, has been deeply felt by fans and colleagues alike.
