An ongoing dispute over alleged noise disturbances turned fatal in Brooklyn, New York City on Sunday night, October 29, 2023, resulting in the death of a father and his stepson.
The victims, 47-year-old Bladimy Mathurin and his 27-year-old stepson, Chinwai Mode, were shot in their apartment building after an altercation with their downstairs neighbor.
The Mathurin family resided on the fourth floor of a Brooklyn apartment complex at 1418 Brooklyn Avenue for over four years. According to reports, they were frequently at odds with the downstairs neighbor, who regularly filed complaints about noise disturbances, even on occasions when the family claimed no loud noises were produced.
On Sunday, the situation escalated. The downstairs neighbor, identified as Jason Pass, confronted the Mathurin family. A video surveillance camera showed Pass arguing with Mathurin’s wife. The confrontation escalated and led to Mathurin emerging from the apartment wielding scissors. It was at this moment that Pass shot both Mathurin and his stepson, Mode, in the head. Both victims succumbed to their injuries.
Pass, 47, escaped after the shooting but was found hiding in his car in Bath Beach on Wednesday morning. He was shot several times by officers as he came out of his car with a knife and lunged at one of the officers. The shots were fatal.
This was not the first time Pass had expressed his grievances over noise disturbances. Records show that since March 2022, Pass had reached out to 311, the New York City non-emergency helpline, six times to complain about noise coming from the Mathurin home.
The aftermath of the shooting has left the community in shock. The police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this violent turn of events, with the intention of painting a clear picture of the dynamics between the neighbors leading up to the incident.
Authorities are seeking Jason Pass in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials urge anyone with information about Pass’s whereabouts or additional details about the incident to come forward.
