In a disturbing incident in Dearborn County, Indiana, 45-year-old Mohammed Mondal has been accused of the murder of his wife, Stacy Mondal, 40, following a heated altercation in their vehicle.
The tragedy unfolded as the couple, along with their two young children, were en route to a family photo session at J.C. Penney on Monday, November 6.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Mohammed Mondal initially contacted authorities claiming the shooting was accidental. He later amended his statement, asserting that he acted in self-defense after his wife allegedly assaulted him with her cell phone and reached for a gun in the vehicle’s center console. This narrative, however, has come under scrutiny, with investigators finding no evidence to corroborate Mondal’s claims of self-defense or Stacy’s supposed infidelity, a factor he cited as a cause of the argument.
The grim details of the incident were revealed in court documents. Mohammed Mondal reportedly shot his wife seven times while their two young children, a one-year-old and an infant, were present in the backseat of the car. This act has led to charges of murder and two counts of neglect of a dependent against Mondal.
Responding officers arrived at the hospital to find a harrowing scene: Stacy Mondal was discovered in the passenger seat, lifeless and covered in blood, with a gun found near her feet. Mohammed Mondal had driven his wife to the hospital following the shooting.
The couple’s argument, as per Mondal’s account to investigators, stemmed from marital issues, including his suspicion of Stacy’s infidelity. However, the evidence gathered thus far does not support these allegations.
Mohammed Mondal’s initial call for help was made to a neighbor, who is a police sergeant, reporting the shooting as accidental or in self-defense. The police response led to the discovery of the fatal outcome and Mondal’s subsequent arrest.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
