In a distressing case out of Indianapolis, Indiana, a local maintenance worker has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 15-year-old girl, Janiya Carr. The teenager’s body was discovered in a wooded area behind her apartment complex, bringing to a tragic close the search that began when her mother reported her missing.
Carr was reported missing by her mother, Demetria Boston, on October 30, 2023. Two days later, a grim discovery was made: her body was found with gunshot wounds to her cheek and head in the woods behind the Carriage House East Apartments, marking a violent end to her young life.
Tevis Walker, a 34-year-old maintenance worker at the Carriage House East Apartments, was charged with Carr’s murder after surveillance footage revealed critical evidence. The video captured Janiya getting into Walker’s vehicle around 4:32 a.m. on October 28, 2023. At 5:21 a.m., the same vehicle was spotted driving to the area where Janiya’s body was eventually found, with movements seen inside the vehicle, although not clearly because the car lights had been turned off.
Walker’s story to the police was that he had driven Janiya to meet someone from whom she intended to purchase a tablet but claimed they never showed up. According to his account, he then returned her to the apartment complex. However, this version of events was contradicted by the surveillance footage and the grim discovery of her body.
It was discovered that Walker had active warrants for his arrest in Alabama and Georgia. These warrants were not identified during the background check process by his employer. The oversight has led to intense scrutiny and criticism from the community, particularly from Janiya’s grieving mother.
An autopsy determined that Carr died from a gunshot wound and associated head trauma. This evidence, coupled with the surveillance footage, formed the basis for Walker’s arrest and the subsequent murder charge.
