On October 31, 2023, a man was fatally attacked by two pit bulls while walking in the Pleasant Oak Mobile Home Park in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
David Eller, age 65, was passing by a common area between two mobile homes when the attack took place. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the two dogs attacking the man, with one noting the disturbing sight of the dogs dragging around an object later identified as the man’s body.
The dogs, which did not belong to the victim, managed to escape from the front porch of their home before launching the unprovoked attack. Onlookers tried to intervene and help the man, but the severity of the attack prevented them from getting near the victim. An eyewitness called 911 to report the attack, but by the time emergency responders arrived at the scene, all they could do was pronounce the man dead.
Located on Ayers Drive near Old Whitesville Road, the Pleasant Oak Mobile Home Park became the center of a major investigation following the incident. Two mobile homes were blocked off with yellow tape as investigators from the sheriff’s office worked diligently to gather evidence and conduct interviews with residents and potential witnesses.
Authorities have since contained the two pit bulls, transferring them to the Berkeley County Animal Center. The fate of the dogs or potential consequences for the owner will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. As of now, the sheriff’s office is attempting to determine if there have been any prior incidents involving the dogs at the same location.
While the exact cause of death will be confirmed post-autopsy, preliminary findings suggest the injuries sustained from the attack were the primary cause.
The incident raised concerns about dog safety, ownership responsibilities, and community precautions. As investigators continue to piece together the details of what transpired, residents of Moncks Corner and the broader Berkeley County community await more information and clarity on the tragic incident.
