In a wooded area of McMinn County, Tennessee, investigators have identified skeletal remains. They belong to David Dewayne Abbott of Georgia, who went missing on June 23, 2016. Abbott, 43 years old at the time, had documented health issues, including schizophrenia. The last time he was seen was near his truck, which was parked a short distance from the site of the remains.

A detailed forensic autopsy was the primary method used to verify the identity of the remains. Steve Blevins, a retired detective who was deeply involved in the 2016 investigation surrounding Abbott’s disappearance, also provided corroborating information. Blevins, though retired, remained attentive and persistent in seeking resolution for the case.

Details about what led to Abbott’s disappearance and subsequent death are yet to be clarified. Early evaluations from investigators do not point to any criminal activity. Current thinking is that Abbott may have wandered into the woods shortly after vacating his truck and met his fate there. The nature of his death and the reason for the lengthy time his remains were not located, especially being in close proximity to frequented areas, are subjects of ongoing inquiry.

Mixed emotions have surfaced among Abbott’s family members upon hearing the news. Both Abbott’s fiancée and stepdaughter have publicly shared their sorrow, coupled with their confusion over the long undetected presence of his remains so close to public sites.

In official comments, the Sheriff drew attention to the notable work of Steve Blevins, the retired detective. Blevins’ unwavering resolve in this case eventually provided clarity for the Abbotts. His efforts epitomize the dedication many law enforcement personnel continue to show, even after retirement, to ensure justice is served and families receive closure.
