Soul vocalist Jean Knight, famed for her timeless track “Mr. Big Stuff,” has passed away at the age of 80.
Knight, born Jean Caliste, died on November 22, 2023, in New Orleans, Louisiana, from natural causes. Her death was confirmed through a statement from her publicist and corroborated by her family.
Knight, who was born in 1943 in New Orleans, saw her career surge in the 1970s with her chart-topping single “Mr. Big Stuff,” recorded in Jackson, Mississippi’s Malaco Studios. The song climbed to the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated the Soul Singles chart for five weeks.
Knight’s entry into the music world began in 1965 with a demo of Jackie Wilson’s “Stop Doggin’ Me Around.” Her early career was centered in New Orleans, but she gained national attention in 1970 after being discovered by Ralph Williams.
“Mr. Big Stuff” brought Knight a Grammy nomination in 1972 and earned her double platinum status. Her discography includes hits like “Helping Man” and “Carry On,” released through several labels, including her own, Comstar.
Knight’s influence in the music industry was officially recognized in 2007 with her induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Bernie Cyrus, from the Louisiana Music Commission, reflected on Knight’s unique style and her commitment to charitable causes, particularly through her hit “Mr. Big Stuff.”
