A teenage boy died after falling from a balcony on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas, which is based at Port Canaveral, Florida. The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday, November 25, 2023, as the vessel was en route from Florida to the Bahamas.
The victim, a 16-year-old passenger, fell from the balcony to a lower deck of the ship. Despite immediate efforts to provide medical assistance, the teenager was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The details surrounding the circumstances of the fall remain unclear, and it is not yet known if it was accidental.
Responding to the tragedy, Royal Caribbean International expressed their condolences to the deceased’s family. They said, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of a guest, and our hearts go out to the family.” Out of respect for the family’s privacy, the cruise line has refrained from providing further comments.
The Allure of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, with a double occupancy capacity of 5,496 passengers and a full capacity of 6,828. The ship offers three and four-night cruises to the Bahamas, including stops at Nassau and Perfect Day at Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. The cruise on which the incident occurred was a three-night sailing that departed from Port Canaveral on Friday and returned on Monday.
Unfortunately, incidents on board cruises are not isolated. In April 2023, a passenger named Warwick Tollemache went overboard from the Quantum of the Seas near Hawaii.
In another instance, in June of 2023, a woman fell overboard from the Mariner of the Seas near the Dominican Republic. Fortunately, she was rescued.
On September 2, 2023, a man went overboard from the Wonder of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, south of Cuba. This incident prompted the ship’s crew’s immediate search and rescue operation.
