A fatal shooting occurred at the New Hampshire State Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Concord, New Hampshire, on Friday, November 17, 2023, resulting in the death of a security guard and the shooter.

John Madore, a 33-year-old man, entered the hospital lobby armed with a 9mm pistol. He also had an AR-style rifle, a tactical vest, and additional ammunition in a nearby vehicle.

Madore fatally shot Bradley Haas, a 63-year-old security guard who was a former police chief, inside the hospital’s lobby. Haas was taken to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.

A New Hampshire State trooper, who was on patrol on the hospital campus, responded to the situation and shot Madore, killing him. The actions of both Haas and the state trooper were later praised by officials, who highlighted their roles in preventing further loss of life in this critical situation. The trooper’s quick response was noted for its effectiveness in neutralizing the threat.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. There were no connections established between Madore and the hospital or its staff at the time of the incident. The hospital, known for treating people with mental illnesses, was secured by state police, who provide security on the campus.

Approximately 185 people were present at the hospital at the time of the incident, but no patients were injured. Following the shooting, the hospital remained operational but was closed to visitors for the evening. Law enforcement officials, including the New Hampshire State Police, responded to the scene to ensure the safety of the patients and staff.

Governor Chris Sununu acknowledged the quick response of the first responders and law enforcement officers in managing the situation.

The shooting raised concerns about security at healthcare facilities, especially those catering to vulnerable populations. Like many psychiatric facilities, the New Hampshire State Hospital is a secure location where visitors must pass through metal detectors. This protocol reflects the ongoing efforts to maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff in such institutions.

Officials are looking into Madore’s background and any potential motives for his actions.
