A 34-year-old instructor pilot assigned to the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida lost his life while free-diving on November 11, 2023.

Nicholas Brown, hailing from Austin, Texas, was discovered dead off the coast of Florida.

Brown, known affectionately as “Smog” among his peers, was reported missing after he embarked on a free-diving excursion in the Gulf of Mexico. He was last seen around 4:30 pm on November 10, wearing a black wetsuit and a yellow snorkel, about one mile south of East Pass in Destin.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) issued an Aqua Alert to assist in locating the distressed swimmer.

The Coast Guard, found Brown’s body in about 80 feet of water, about 50 feet from where he was last seen. Free divers do not use equipment to breath underwater, such as scuba gear, instead, they hold their breath for long periods.

Captain Brown’s role at Eglin Air Force Base as an instructor pilot for the 58th Fighter Squadron was a testament to his skill and dedication to the U.S. Air Force. His loss resonates deeply within the military community. Colonel Dave Skalicky, leader of the 33rd Fighter Wing in the U.S. Air Force, conveyed his deep sympathies and condolences. He stressed the unit’s commitment to supporting and assisting those impacted by the recent tragedy.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established in memory of Brown, describing him as a loving husband and dedicated father to two young children. The campaign aims to support his family during this challenging time, with all proceeds going directly to the Brown family.
