A hunting trip in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, resulted in the death of Avery Davis, a six-year-old boy, following a shooting accident involving a 17-year-old.
The incident occurred on a Friday morning, November 24, 2023, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
The SCDNR reported that the child was on an elevated stand when he was hit by a stray shotgun pellet from the 17-year-old shooter on the ground. They have classified the situation as an accident, though details on the exact circumstances or potential criminal charges have not been specified.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of the victim. The young boy was described as an active, outdoorsy child with a passion for sports and writing. He was known for his bright personality and love of the outdoors.
Francie Daniel, Avery’s first-grade teacher, described him as “the brightest little light,” noting his bubbly nature and love for being with friends and engaging in sports activities. He also showed a keen interest in writing, particularly on topics related to outdoor activities.
Following the incident, Avery’s family made the decision to donate his organs. His father, Jeremy Davis, expressed pride in his son’s ability to potentially save other children through organ donation.
In a tribute post on Facebook, Jeremy Davis remembered his son for his vivacious personality and love for outdoor activities. He emphasized Avery’s vibrant spirit and the impact he had in his six years of life.
Avery’s school, Calhoun Academy, organized a tribute by dressing in camouflage to honor him. Grief counselors were made available to his classmates to help them cope with the loss.
