7-Eleven Security Guard Killed During Robbery

A deadly shooting claimed the life of a 59-year-old security guard at a local 7-Eleven store in the Adams Point neighborhood of Oakland, California. The incident occurred Friday night, December 8, 2023.

James Johnson was fatally shot while attempting to thwart a robbery, involving a small amount of candy, at the 7-Eleven located at 2350 Harrison Street, a familiar spot for many residents.

The shooting took place shortly before 10:15 p.m., according to the Oakland Police Department. Surveillance footage reveals a brief exchange between Johnson and the suspect, followed by the shooting that led to his death.

Locals remember Johnson as a kind and welcoming presence in the store. Melody Parker, a frequent customer, recalled his friendly greetings and the positive energy he brought to the establishment. Johnson’s daughter, known as Snow, described him as a protector, emphasizing his caring nature and willingness to safeguard those around him.

Residents like Mark Blunck, who has lived in the area since the 1990s, expressed concern over escalating crime rates in Oakland. Blunck noted a change in his own habits, opting to stay indoors at night due to safety concerns.

Johnson, who resided in a building behind the 7-Eleven, was a well-known figure in the community. He was transitioning out of homelessness and lived in transitional housing. His death has sparked a wave of grief and calls for justice, not only from his family but also from the community he served.

The Oakland Police Department is actively investigating the case, seeking the suspect involved in the shooting. They urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact their Homicide Section.
