Vladimir Egorov, a 46-year-old political ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a member of Putin’s United Russia party, lost his life on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, after what is presumed to be a fall from a third-floor window.
Egorov, who also served as a deputy in the Tobolsk City Duma, was found in the front yard of a home on Kedrovaya Street in Tobolsk, located in the Tyumen Oblast in western Siberia.
The circumstances of Egorov’s death are currently under investigation, with Russian state media and the Telegram channel Baza, known for its connections to Russian security services, reporting the incident. There were no visible signs of a criminal act on Egorov’s body. Pathologists are set to conduct an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
Sources suggest that Egorov may have been experiencing heart problems prior to his fall, with one source citing heart issues as “one of the most likely reasons” for the incident. This assertion aligns with a pattern observed in Russia, where heart problems are frequently cited in explaining the untimely or suspicious deaths of high-profile individuals, particularly since the onset of the war against Ukraine.
Egorov’s career includes a tenure as a trained lawyer and a business owner. He had to step down from the city administration in 2016 following a corruption scandal, though he was not convicted. After his return to politics, Egorov emerged as one of Tobolsk’s wealthiest local deputies, boasting an income of around 9.1 million rubles (about $100,500).
Egorov’s death adds to a series of mysterious fatalities among Russian high-ranking officials and business figures since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Notably, these include the deaths of people like the Lukoil chairman Ravil Maganov and Russian defense official Marina Yankina, who also reportedly succumbed to falls from windows and were said to have been suffering from heart problems.
Egorov is survived by his wife and two children. The investigation into his death is ongoing as officials and pathologists work to unravel the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
