Ex-MLB Player Dies at Young Age of 49

Ryan Minor, a former infielder for the Baltimore Orioles and the Montreal Expos, passed away on December 22, 2023, at the age of 49, following a battle with cancer.

Minor is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken Jr. in a game on September 20, 1998, ending Ripken’s streak of 2,632 consecutive games in MLB.

Born in Canton, Ohio, in 1974, Minor excelled in both baseball and basketball at the University of Oklahoma. He played a significant role in the Sooners winning the 1994 College World Series championship in baseball. In basketball, he was named the Big Eight Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in 1995, scoring 1,946 points throughout his college tenure.

Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA Draft, Minor did not join the NBA and instead entered professional baseball. The Baltimore Orioles selected him in the 1996 MLB draft, and he debuted in the major leagues with the Orioles in 1998.

Minor’s MLB career spanned from 1998 to 2001, playing for the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos in 142 games. His career statistics include a .233 batting average, 5 home runs, and 27 RBIs.

Following his playing career, Minor pursued coaching, leading teams in the Orioles’ minor league system such as the Delmarva Shorebirds and Frederick Keys in Maryland. His commitment to baseball continued through his mentorship of younger players.

Recently, the University of Oklahoma announced Minor’s upcoming induction into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2024, in recognition of his achievements in both baseball and basketball.
