More than five years after the brutal murder of a 51-year-old North Shore Oahu, Hawaii woman, two people have been sentenced for their roles in the crime that shocked Hawaii.
Stephen Brown, 29, and Hailey Dandurand, 26, convicted for the brutal murder of Telma Boinville, faced their sentencing on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, concluding a harrowing chapter for the victim’s family and the local community.
Judge Rowena Somerville sentenced both defendants to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Brown received additional sentences of 20 years for kidnapping and burglary.
Dandurand’s sentencing included life for murder and kidnapping, 20 years for burglary in the first degree, one year for unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, and ten years for unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.
The case dates back to December 7, 2017, when the victim, Boinville, a teacher, was supplementing her income by cleaning vacation rentals in Pupukea on Hawaii’s Oahu Island.
Prosecutors said Boinville walked in on Brown and Dandurand as they were burglarizing the property. The victim was tied up and beaten to death using multiple weapons, including a machete, a knife and a meat tenderizer. Boinville’s young daughter, Makana, then eight-years-old, waiting in the car, was also kidnapped and tied up inside the home.
The jury found both Brown and Dandurand guilty of second-degree murder, rejecting Dandurand’s claim that she was coerced into the crimes by Brown. The judge described the crime as one of the most heinous in Hawaii’s history.
During the sentencing, Kevin Emery, Boinville’s husband, spoke of the profound impact the crime has had on their daughter. He described her ongoing fears and the drastic changes in their lives, including her reluctance to enter any home without assurance of safety.
