Iconic Soap Opera Actor Dies at 93

Jack Axelrod, a revered figure in the American entertainment industry, known for his portrayal of mob boss Victor Jerome on the television series “General Hospital,” passed away on November 28, 2023. He was 93. According to his representative, Jennifer Garland, Axelrod died of natural causes in Los Angeles.

Born on January 25, 1930, in Los Angeles, Axelrod’s varied life experiences included serving as a corporal in the US Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955. His academic journey at the University of California, Berkeley, started with architecture but eventually led him to the performing arts.

With a career that spanned over 50 years, Axelrod became a significant and lasting figure in the entertainment industry. His role on “General Hospital” between 1987 and 1989 was a highlight of his television career, which also included parts in “Grey’s Anatomy,” “My Name is Earl,” “Dallas,” “Dynasty,” “Night Court,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” His final acting role was in the 2020 feature “Bad Therapy.”

Axelrod’s film career began with Woody Allen’s 1971 comedy “Bananas,” followed by appearances in “Hancock,” “Little Fockers,” “Super 8,” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”

He developed his acting skills under Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York City. Hagen, who died in 2004, was a distinguished actor and teacher, known for her innovative techniques and tutelage of many acclaimed actors. Axelrod’s six-year study with Hagen played a crucial role in his artistic development.

In theater, Axelrod was involved in a 1969 off-Broadway production of “Macbeth” and the Broadway play “Gandhi.” He also imparted his knowledge as a theater instructor at various universities.

Reflecting on Axelrod’s later life, Garland noted his fondness for drawing, keeping up with current events, reciting Shakespeare, and his enjoyment of the outdoors.
