A fatal shooting at Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida on December 23, 2023, has left one man dead and another person injured. The incident, which occurred around 3:40 p.m., led to a widespread law enforcement response.
David Nathaniel Barron, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Additionally, a woman received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg. The incident also resulted in one person experiencing chest pain and another sustaining a broken arm.
The Ocala Police Department, led by Chief Mike Balken, rapidly addressed the situation following reports of the shooting. The incident, which unfolded in the mall’s common area, is currently being investigated as a targeted act of violence.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Albert J. Shell Jr., is sought for premeditated first-degree murder and attempted premeditated first-degree murder. Shell, last seen in black pants, a hoodie, and a black mask, remains at large. A firearm, believed to be used in the shooting, was recovered at the scene by the police. The Ocala police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Shell’s arrest.
Paddock Mall, home to stores like J.C. Penney and Foot Locker, was evacuated and closed after the incident. The mall is managed by Washington Prime Group (WPG), who have not yet released a statement regarding the mall’s security measures following the shooting.
