Surf Rock Legend Dead at 67

Jeffrey Foskett, the esteemed guitarist known for his long-standing association with The Beach Boys, died on December 11, 2023, at the age of 67.

His death was attributed to anaplastic thyroid cancer, a diagnosis he had been battling for several years. Foskett’s journey with the Beach Boys was as remarkable as it was enduring, spanning over four decades and leaving an indelible mark on the band’s legacy.

Born in San Jose, California, his passion for The Beach Boys began early in his life, particularly after hearing their hit “I Get Around.” This enthusiasm culminated in a serendipitous encounter with Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys’ co-founder, in 1976.

His talent and dedication soon led him to tour with Mike Love’s Endless Summer Beach Band and eventually to replace Carl Wilson, another original member, in The Beach Boys until 1990.

Foskett’s contributions to The Beach Boys extended beyond his role as a guitarist. His falsetto vocals blended seamlessly with the band’s iconic sound, evident during his participation in their 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour and the 2012 album “That’s Why God Made the Radio.” His solo work also garnered attention, with albums like “Thru My Window” and “Voices” showcasing his versatility. Notably, “Voices” featured covers of classic songs, including The Beach Boys’ own hits.

Despite his success, he remained humble and focused on his music rather than his fame. In a 2014 interview, he expressed that his primary concern was the approval and friendship of Brian Wilson, with whom he shared a deep and lasting bond. Wilson and other band members and artists like Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, and Roy Orbison recognized Foskett’s exceptional talent and influence.

Foskett’s battle with cancer was a challenging period. Diagnosed with stage 4 anaplastic thyroid cancer in 2019, he underwent extensive treatment, including participation in a clinical trial at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His perseverance and positive attitude were evident in his final social media post in March, where he celebrated a significant milestone in his treatment journey.

Tributes poured in from band members, friends, and fans, each highlighting his kindness, talent, and the joy he brought to the world through his music. The impact of his loss is deeply felt in the music community, with many expressing their sorrow and admiration for a man who was much more than a guitarist—he was a friend, a mentor, and a source of inspiration.
