On November 24, 2023, an Iowa mother was attacked by three pit bulls, leaving her in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., resulting in severe injuries to Brittany Skoland, necessitating the amputation of both her legs up to the knees and parts of her hands. She also sustained serious head trauma and will require facial reconstruction surgery.
Police were alerted to the attack in the 800 block of South 16th Street by a neighbor who reported hearing cries for help. Upon arrival, officers encountered Skoland being mauled by the dogs. Attempts to disperse the animals were unsuccessful, leading the responding officer to fatally shoot all three dogs to cease the attack.
The victim was transported to Unity Point Trinity Medical Center in Fort Dodge due to the severity of her injuries. She was later airlifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, known for its advanced trauma care facilities.
The Fort Dodge community was shocked by the brutality of the attack. Neighbors described the dogs as typically obedient to their owner, though some mentioned previous problems with the animals. One witness, Kerri Johnson, recounted hearing the gunshots and seeing the aftermath, including one of the deceased dogs. Another neighbor, Rosemary Possehn, detailed hearing the shots and witnessing the police response to subdue the attacking dogs.
The family of Brittany Skoland is rallying to support her through this difficult time. A GoFundMe page, established by Skoland’s aunt Teresa Hanus, has been set up to help cover medical expenses and necessary home modifications for wheelchair accessibility. The fundraiser has garnered significant community support, with donations exceeding $13,600 as of the latest updates.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the mauling.
