In Halifax County, North Carolina, 22-year-old Kaneijah Zyir Bradley was taken into custody on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, accused of the murder of her 10-year-old sister.
The incident occurred at their family home in the 2000 block of Beaverdam Road near Enfield.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that deputies responded to the home around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, January 15, following a report from a mother who discovered her 10-year-old daughter, Mashiyah Squire, missing.
Upon arrival, deputies found that the mother had located her daughter in the backyard, partially inside a garbage bag in a dumpster, where it was immediately evident that the child had died.
Further investigation revealed that the young girl had sustained multiple stab wounds. Authorities believe the stabbing took place inside the home before the body was moved to the backyard. Dark spots were found in the girl’s bedroom and two knives, a vacuum cleaner, and disinfectant were taken as evidence. While the Sheriff’s Office did not initially disclose the victim’s identity, it has been confirmed that she was Bradley’s younger sister.
Bradley, quickly identified as the primary suspect, was arrested and charged with murder. She is currently detained in the Halifax County Detention Center without bond, awaiting her first court appearance scheduled for January 25.
Sheriff Tyree Davis commented on the incident, stating, “This is such a sad incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
The shock of this gruesome event has reverberated through the local community, with neighbor Bernard Day expressing disbelief, “We’ve never heard of anything like this in our neighborhood.”
This adds to Bradley’s history of legal troubles. In April 2023, she faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury and larceny of a motor vehicle.
In August 2023, Bradley was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon against a government official and a misdemeanor charge of resisting a public officer. These past encounters highlight a pattern of violent behavior.
The motive for the alleged murder remains unclear, and the investigation by the sheriff’s office is ongoing. Authorities are seeking additional information that may shed light on this case.
