A 32-year-old co-owner of the popular Tacoma, Washington-based Howdy Bagel was fatally shot in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The tragedy occurred while Jacob Carter was vacationing with his husband and business partner, Daniel Blagovich, in the early hours of January 5, 2024.
The couple was near Bourbon and Kerlerec Streets in the city’s Marigny neighborhood when the shooting took place at around 1:30 am.
The assailant, whose identity remains unknown, approached Carter, shot him, then fled the scene. No arrests have been made in connection with Carter’s death.
Distraught over the loss, Blagovich revealed in an emotional statement to the media that Carter died in his arms.
Howdy Bagel, which started as a farmers market venture in 2021 and expanded to a storefront on South Tacoma Way in June, has since gained acclaim for its unique bagel recipes and inviting atmosphere.
The store announced Carter’s death on its Instagram page, paying tribute to his kindness, warmth, and the significant impact he had on the community. In light of this devastating event, the bagel shop has temporarily closed to allow Blagovich and the staff time to mourn.
The community has rallied in support of Blagovich and Howdy Bagel during this challenging time.
A GoFundMe page was established to assist with shop costs and employee wages, amassing over $240,000 in donations.
Additionally, local Tacoma businesses, including Bar Rosa, En Rama cocktail bar, and The Cat and Rabbitt Cake Shop, have contributed a portion of their proceeds to the fund.
Carter, a Texas native, and Blagovich from West Seattle, founded Howdy Bagel after losing their jobs during the pandemic.
They envisioned the bagel shop as a space of inclusiveness and community. Carter, who had previously worked as a social worker and documentary photographer, once expressed that the name ‘Howdy’ symbolized warmth and bringing people together. This ethos was evident in every aspect of their business.
