A Michigan man, aged 23 and a father of three, was arrested on Christmas Day, following the shooting of his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend.
Deandre Patrick Lawrence had just dropped off Christmas presents for his children at his ex-girlfriend’s residence when the incident occurred.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office reports that Lawrence arrived at the home to give gifts to his kids when a violent confrontation started with his ex-girlfriend’s new partner, who also resided there. The victim attempted to escape, but tripped and fell, at which point, authorities claim, Lawrence shot him twice in his back.
The victim, whose age was not revealed in the reports, survived the attack but is in critical condition. Lawrence was subsequently taken into custody and faces severe charges, including assault with the intent to murder and felony firearm possession.
Lawrence, who has prior felony convictions for fleeing and eluding, and home invasion from Wayne and Macomb County, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. The court set his bond at $1 million, with stringent conditions including no contact with the victim or witnesses and mandatory GPS tethering if released.
Peter J. Lucido, the Macomb County Prosecutor, weighed in on the incident, stating “Violent actions have no place in resolving disputes. Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We will work to ensure accountability for this terrible Christmas Day shooting.”
A probable cause conference for Lawrence is scheduled for January 4, 2024, followed by a preliminary examination on January 11. The case has put a spotlight on the issue of domestic violence and its effects on families, especially during what should be joyous and tranquil periods.
