Jill Biden Reveals Personal Moments With Queen Elizabeth

In June 2021, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden experienced a quintessentially British encounter when they shared afternoon tea with the late Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

The private meeting in the regal setting of the Queen’s residence near London was part of the President’s first international trip after taking office.

The occasion was marked with ceremonial fanfare, including the inspection of a guard of honor and the playing of the U.S. national anthem, as the Bidens were formally received by the Queen in the Quadrangle outside Windsor Castle.

The tea meeting, described as intimate and engaging, saw the 95-year-old monarch serving tea to her guests, showcasing her renowned independence. Despite offers from the Bidens to assist, the Queen insisted on serving the tea herself.

First Lady Jill Biden, reflecting on this interaction, highlighted the Queen’s insistence on serving tea, recalling her saying, “No, no, no. You sit,” as she took charge of the teapot.

This anecdote, as captured by the royal biographer Robert Hardman in his new book, released on January 18, 2024, “The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy,” underscores the personal nature of their interaction, illustrating the Queen’s blend of formality and warmth.

During the 40-minute conversation, President Biden found a personal connection with the Queen, noting her resemblance to his mother in both appearance and generosity.

The topics of discussion ranged from life at the White House to world leaders, indicating a mix of personal insights and broader global perspectives. The Queen’s famous Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs even made an appearance.

The Bidens’ visit to Windsor Castle followed their participation in the G7 Summit in Cornwall and was part of a larger diplomatic tour, which included meetings with various world leaders and an upcoming NATO summit.

The tea encounter with the Queen was not just a diplomatic formality but a cherished personal experience for the Bidens, who later attended the Queen’s funeral following her passing in September 2022.
