Tourist Dies in New York State Park Accident

A 39-year-old Singaporean tourist, Nur Aisyah Binte MD Akbar, tragically died following a fall from a cliff in Minnewaska State Park, Ulster County, New York, according to multiple reports.

The unfortunate incident took place on December 22, 2023, while Akbar was hiking Beacon Hill Trail with her spouse, Abdul Rauf Bin Mohd Said, 41.

While capturing photographs near the cliff, Akbar reportedly lost her balance and plummeted nearly 70 feet. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. local time, prompting Bin Mohd Said to immediately contact emergency services.

Following the emergency call, New York State Police, State Park police, park operations personnel, state DEC Forest Rangers, and local emergency medical technicians, among others, swiftly responded.

The State Police’s aviation unit took part in the rescue mission, airlifting Akbar from her landing spot. Despite nearly three hours of resuscitation attempts by medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at Ellenville Regional Hospital.

Bin Mohd Said expressed his sorrow and remorse over the incident in a Facebook post, stating that he wished he had been the one to fall. They were appreciating the picturesque landscape before the tragic fall, he wrote.

The couple, who jointly founded a real estate investment firm, frequently visited the United States for work. Akbar is remembered by Bin Mohd Said as an individual with deep compassion for animals and a profound concern for those around her.

Minnewaska State Park, located near Kerhonkson in upstate New York, is a favored location for a variety of outdoor pursuits, including hiking, biking, and rock climbing.
