Two U.S. Navy SEALs have been reported missing after a nighttime operation off the coast of Somalia on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

The incident occurred while the SEALs were engaged in an interdiction mission in the Gulf of Aden, a strategic waterway known for its military significance and proximity to Yemen.

The SEALs, whose identities have not been disclosed, were part of a team attempting to board a vessel when they were unexpectedly knocked off by high waves.

Demonstrating adherence to their rigorous training and protocols, when one SEAL was overtaken by the waves, the other SEAL promptly jumped in to assist, as per Navy standard procedure.

The mission, conducted in the cover of darkness, was part of the United States’ continued efforts to intercept weapons bound for Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. These operations are crucial in mitigating the flow of arms in a region beset by conflict and instability.

Officials have clarified that this particular mission was unrelated to both Operation Prosperity Guardian, a joint initiative aimed at safeguarding commercial vessels navigating the Red Sea, and the recent retaliatory strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen by the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Gulf of Aden, a focal point of these operations, has witnessed heightened activity in recent months. The area has been a hotspot for military engagement due to repeated incidents involving Houthi forces. These engagements have included numerous attacks on commercial vessels, necessitating a robust maritime presence by the U.S. and allied forces.

The U.S. Central Command has initiated extensive search and rescue operations. The warm waters of the Gulf of Aden are currently being scoured in hopes of locating the missing SEALs. Central Command, maintaining operational security, has refrained from releasing further details until the conclusion of the recovery efforts.

As the search continues, the Gulf of Aden remains a critical area for international shipping and military operations, with the U.S. and its allies committed to maintaining security and stability in the international waters.
