A targeted shooting on February 12, 2024, at a local bar in Toa Baja, a northern town in Puerto Rico, claimed the lives of five people and critically injured four others.
The local authorities are currently probing the incident, believed to be connected to the island’s ongoing drug trafficking disputes. This incident underscores Puerto Rico’s continuing struggle with organized crime and rampant violence.
The attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen from a moving vehicle, targeting patrons at the bar. The victims included three males and two females.
The brother of the ex-mayor of the coastal town of Cataño is among the critically injured. A 35-year-old man, suspected of involvement in drug activities and believed to be the primary target, was also killed in the attack.
Despite the ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. This shooting marks a worrying increase in the island’s violence, with 74 reported homicides this year alone, surpassing the total from the same period last year.
The heightened violence is especially concerning given Puerto Rico’s crucial role as a key transit point for narcotics from South America entering the U.S. market.

However, the recent violence in Toa Baja and a similar incident last month in Ceiba, where a drug-related assault along a highway resulted in five deaths, including a 16-year-old boy, suggest a potential intensification in the methods used by drug trafficking groups.
