In a heart-wrenching incident, Harnett County Deputy Sheriff Chris Johnson, aged 51, tragically lost his life in a devastating multi-vehicle crash.
The accident, occurring on the afternoon of February 6, 2024, involved Johnson’s patrol vehicle and two other vehicles on Darroch Road in Lillington, North Carolina, while he was returning home from his duties as a school resource officer at Highland Middle School in Sanford.
Deputy Johnson, a father of four with over 25 years of service in law enforcement, was declared dead at the scene, according to Sheriff Wayne Coats.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, leading the investigation, reported that Johnson’s vehicle crossed the center line, colliding with a semi-truck and then a Dodge Durango.
While the occupants of the Durango were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the semi-truck driver was unharmed.
This tragic event has sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences.
Deputy Johnson, who had dedicated the last 16 months of his service to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office after lengthy tenures at the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and Dunn Police Department, was remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service and his kind-hearted nature.
Harnett County Schools expressed profound sorrow over his passing, highlighting his dedication to the safety and well-being of students and staff. Similarly, South Harnett Elementary School, where Johnson had also served, praised his positive influence and the void his absence left behind.
In a gesture of respect and mourning, Governor Roy Cooper directed that all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff until sunset on February 13, the day he is laid to rest.
This state-wide recognition underscores the high regard in which Johnson was held and his significant contributions to the community.
The tragedy has also spurred a wave of support for Johnson’s family. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by a law enforcement support organization has raised over $10,000 to assist his widow and children during this difficult time.
Johnson leaves behind his wife of 27 years and four children, aged 11 to 25.
