Tony Hutson, a former guard for the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, passed away on February 3, 2024, at the age of 49. His death was announced in an online obituary shared by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born on March 13, 1974, in Houston, Texas, Hutson’s football career began at MacArthur High School, where he showcased his talent as an offensive tackle. He continued to develop his skills at Kilgore College before transferring to Northeastern Oklahoma State University. He received NAIA All-American honors in 1994 and 1995, distinguishing himself on the field with his performance.
Despite his collegiate success, Hutson faced challenges early in his professional career. In 1996, during a physical examination by the Raiders, a benign tumor was found on his right lung. This setback did not deter him; after undergoing successful surgery to remove the tumor, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent.
Hutson’s resilience and determination were evident throughout his time with the Cowboys. He spent 1996 on the practice squad and missed most of the 1997 training camp due to wrist surgery. However, he made his debut later that year and made his first start in a memorable 17-14 victory over Washington.
Hutson’s NFL career spanned from 1996 to 2001, during which he played guard for the Dallas Cowboys and briefly for the Washington Redskins as a free agent. In 2001, he was signed by the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. His tenure with the Cowboys was marked by perseverance through various injuries and challenges. Despite these obstacles, Hutson’s contributions to the team were significant, particularly in protecting Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman.
His dedication to the sport and his team was remembered fondly by teammates, including Randall Godfrey, who praised Hutson as one of his favorite teammates and great friends.
Hutson’s journey was not just about his achievements on the field but also his impact off it. Known for his humor, kindness, and involvement in charitable activities, particularly those involving children, Hutson left a lasting legacy beyond the football field.
Hutson is survived by his mother, Joyce Figures of Dumas, AR, his three children – daughter Lauren Benton of Houston, TX, and two sons, Christian Benton and Antonio Fleming both of Houston, TX, as well as several brothers and sisters.
A wake and funeral are scheduled for later this week.
