On Friday, February 9, a 17-year-old girl was taken into custody following the deadly shooting of her father and younger brother in their family apartment in the North Valleys in Reno, Nevada.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that police were alerted by a 911 call from a neighbor, who reported hearing gunshots and screams from the home. Following this, the suspect, Mashenka Reid, herself made a 911 call, during which, according to an affidavit, she confessed to the dispatcher, “I shot my dad. I shot my brother. My brother is dead,” and disturbingly admitted, “I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody.”
Responding officers were met with a grim scene: Reid’s brother, a child aged around four or five years, was found dead on the living room couch, with a gunshot wound to the head. The body of Reid’s father was discovered in the garage, bearing gunshot wounds to his chest and back. Paramedics at the scene pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
At the time of the incident, authorities revealed that Reid’s younger sister was also in the apartment. She managed to survive by hiding in a locked bedroom until rescued by a police officer who had to forcibly enter the room.
Reid used a Walther PPS handgun in the commission of the killings, a detail she mentioned in her 911 confession, stating she had dropped the weapon inside the apartment. Upon arriving at the scene, the first responding officer detained Reid, placing her on the floor, before proceeding to ensure the safety of the surviving family members.
Reid faces charges as an adult with two counts of open murder. She is expected to appear in court for a bail hearing on Thursday, February 15.
The ongoing investigation seeks to piece together the events that culminated in this devastating loss of life.
