On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, a domestic dispute resulted in the death of one man and injury to two other people in Amarillo, Texas.
The Amarillo Police Department (APD) has been actively investigating the case, which occurred in a residential area of the city, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
At around 6 p.m., APD officers were dispatched to a home in the 3000 block of Mays Street after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers found a scene of domestic disturbance where two family members had been shot while engaging in everyday activities at their residence.
The victims, identified as Kim Dunn and Rosco Flanagan, the mother and stepfather of the shooter, were reportedly watching television when 27-year-old Kodey Dunn emerged from a bedroom wielding a handgun and opened fire. Despite their injuries, the couple managed to flee the scene and sought refuge with a neighbor, who promptly contacted emergency services.
They were subsequently hospitalized and underwent surgery. Both are reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, two other family members, identified as the suspect’s brothers, were present during the incident and escaped without physical harm.
The APD activated its Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), involving SWAT officers and crisis negotiators, in response to reports that the assailant remained inside the home. The standoff concluded with a sorrowful discovery: Kodey Dunn was found dead in a bedroom, dying from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Kim Flanagan, despite being shot and still recovering in the hospital, is grieving the loss of her son. She expressed her sorrow on a social media platform, lamenting, “I’m so lost and hurt. My child is gone. My sweet, sweet Kodey.”
In the aftermath, the APD’s Homicide Unit, along with CSI officers and detectives from the Violent Crimes Squad, has been tasked with piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy. Their investigation aims to shed light on the motives behind Dunn’s actions and to gather evidence crucial for understanding the full scope of the incident.
